A triathlete vomited ten times on live TV after swimming in the Seine River during the men’s race at the 2024 Olympics.
Tyler Mislawchuk, who finished in ninth place, was seen vomiting shortly after completing the gruelling race that included a 1.5-km swim, a 40km bike ride, and a 10km run.
The TV cameras captured the unpleasant moment, also showing several other athletes lying on the mat, gasping for breath.
The Canadian star was one of the first to dive in during the men’s triathlon on July 31, 2024.
He finished in 9th place and shocked viewers by vomiting profusely upon reaching the finish line.
After the race, Mislawchuk said in an interview, “Did I vomit once? No, I threw up 10 times. The last four kilometres were deadly and I started feeling sick and very hot,”
For over 100 years, swimming in the Seine has been mostly banned due to the risk of contracting diseases from the polluted water, known for its high levels of E.coli.
The Seine, which flows through Paris, has suffered from pollution in recent years, contaminated by industrial waste, sewage, and other pollutants.
The organizers of the Paris Olympics have reportedly spent over $2 billion cleaning up the river ahead of the Olympics in France’s capital.
Athletes participating in the marathon swimming and triathlon events are now allowed to swim in the Seine for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo recently swam in the river to demonstrate that it is safe for swimming.
“It’s sweet and wonderful and the result of a lot of work. I remember back in 2015 when we started our campaign for the Games, the international triathlon federation asked.
“Why not a triathlon in the Seine? ‘Will athletes be able to swim in the Seine?’ Today we can say they can.”
