Jack, ten years old, was upset that his mother had to work seven days a week to provide for their basic necessities. In an attempt to give his mother a break, he made the decision to take matters into his own hands and went to her workplace to speak with her supervisor.
Ten-year-old Jack lived with his single mother, Debra. Since the young man never met his father, his mother took on the role of both parent to him.
Debra was employed by a large corporation seven days a week as a cleaner. She made the decision to work nonstop in order to generate more money for Jack’s necessities.
Although the diligent mother never said it, working every day of the week was taxing on her. It was no simple task cleaning a multi-story structure, and it hurt all over her body.
Jack once noticed his mother sobbing while sitting on their front porch. He heard her speaking with her buddy on the phone as he observed her through the window. Debra looked like she was about to cry. She felt crushed and began to fear. “No, sir! My son is just a boy, so I’m not sure what he said. I really apologize for what he said. Don’t fire me, please. I beg you, I truly need this job.”
Retorting, “Don’t be silly, Debra,” “You’re among the most diligent individuals I’ve ever encountered! You won’t be fired by me without cause. You see, my daughter, who is ten years old, was here yesterday when your son paid me a visit. They both helped me come to certain realizations.”
“Since our children won’t be young for long, I believe it’s critical that we give them time and attention. I want you and Jack to go on this family trip that I’ve planned. Naturally, full payment for the entire vacation will be made,” Mr. Jefferson disclosed. “What do you say?”
Debra was perplexed. She couldn’t possibly afford to take a vacation because she had recently lost her work. She was concerned that they wouldn’t have enough money to cover their everyday costs.
“Sir, thank you for your thoughtfulness. While I would love to spend more time with my son, I simply cannot afford to do so at this time. Again, Debra pleaded, “Please, sir, if you could just give me a chance, I would like to keep my job.”
“Debra, it won’t be feasible. The business world isn’t where you belong. Instead, I would like to invite you to work for my family. Jack and you can cohabit here. Mr. Jefferson said, “We have a cottage in our garden that would be ideal for you two.
“You can work for just a few hours a day, after which you may retire to the cottage and spend more time with Jack. You have brought up a lovely young man who genuinely loves his mother; you should cherish him.”
Mr. Jefferson reached under his table and took out a bouquet of roses at that very time. Greeted Debra, “This is from your son,” he said, passing it across. “Go home and have a great day with him.”
Debra was amazed by her good fortune. She and Jack were finally able to take a trip together for the first time in years. All of their costs were covered when they went to the Bahamas with Mr. Jefferson’s family. Upon their return, they settled into their new cottage housed in an opulent estate they had only ever seen in magazines.
